Money Saver + Relaxation = Happy

I stumbled across the MotherLoad the other day — quite literally!  I was looking for a nice iced chai tea recipe, and instead found this incredible vanilla chai mix!  I will admit to being too frugal to invest in the cardamom (anything that costs more than $10 at Wal-Mart, I expect to be able to wear!), but all the other ingredients were pantry staples (Because of the recent move, I had to buy almost all of them, but I’m happy to have them on-hand now!).
I’ve yet to try it iced, but my plan is to add a double-dose of the mix with 8 oz. of hot water to dissolve it well, and then to pour it over a full glass-full of ice, to cool and dillute it.  I’ll have to let you know how that works!  But I’m enjoying my first hot cuppa right now, and it is truly delectable!  It makes a huge batch, as well — I’m taking it to tonight’s Preemie Hat Knit Night at Main Street Yarns, so anyone else craving a good chai can help themselves!  I’m betting my cup will never run dry!

  1. I saw her homemade chai tea the other day too and as soon as I am out of my boxes of mix, I am going to start making them that way!

  2. Sounds lovely! I buy a pre-mix they sell over here, but I’d much rather make it myself. Sadly, as things usually go, a lot of the ingredients are simply not available here. I sometimes feel like I live in an underprivileged nation 😉 I hope your Preemie Hat knit night went well!

  3. Did you know about buying bulk spices/herbs at EarthFare? You only buy what you need and I’ve never spent more than a dollar or two (usually more like 27 cents to get what I need!) They have cardamom that you can grind yourself – I do it in my mortar and pestle. I LOVE tea, and there’s a cardamom green that I had in Georgetown once that I imitate satisfactorily well at my house. I really like the cardamom, but don’t care for chai as cinnamon in tea just drives me nuts.

  4. Wow, Jeni! That’s awesome!!! I definitely did not know about that! I’ll have to go there!
