Pardon me, your armscye is showing….

I learned a new word last night — armscye.  So, I’ll pass it on to you, so that you won’t get the “huh?” look when you first hear it, too.  Pronounced “arm-SIGH,” an armscye is the armhole in a garment.  It can refer to the finished armhole of a tank-style garment, or to the hole which a sleeve will be set into.  Makes sense, but who knew this was such a useful word?  And how have I lived 29 years and 11 months without having ever heard it before?

I attended a local knitting group last night, and a woman who was making a sweater asked me a question about her armscye shaping.  Fortunately, I was able to answer, once I figured out what an armscye was!  I had completely forgotten the exchange though, until this morning, when I peeked in on the Yarn Harlot’s blog, and there it was.  Second paragraph, sixth sentence (although two of those sentences barely count).  Armscye.  So I googled it and made sure it meant what I thought it did, and now I’m passing it on to you.  Go forth and display your armscyes in good health.
